There are two different second-gen AirPods models, one that comes with a standard charging case and one that offers a wireless charging case. The headphones themselves are identical in both configurations; the only variance is whether you can wirelessly charge them when the battery starts running low or if you need to find a Lightning cable to plug them in.

If you want the cheapest AirPods you can buy, the non-wireless version is the way to go, but you can often find the wireless charging ones for about $30 more if you want the added convenience.

AirPods w/ Charging Case | $40 off

This deal at a few retailers saves you $40 on Apple's entry-level AirPods. Unfortunately, you don't get the wireless charging case, but this is the most affordable way to get brand new AirPods right now.

In late 2019, Apple introduced the AirPods Pro, which built upon the success of the original AirPods and a few features that people wanted to see. With the AirPods Pro, Apple introduced a new design that featured an on-device touch panel for controlling them, changed the tips of the headphones, and included noise cancellation for the first time to date.

With the new features comes a steeper price tag, but luckily you don't have to look very far to find a pretty good deal on them.

What are AirPods?

AirPods is the moniker that Apple's first-party true wireless earbuds offerings carry, with the branding now also extending to Apple's over-ear cans. Apple's wireless audio devices are all designed to be super easy to pair with Apple devices and provide superb audio quality on the go.

Apple's AirPods were initially announced back in September 2016, and they proved a hit in their first year on sale, with most retailers struggling to keep them in stock. The original AirPods featured Apple's brand-new (at the time) W1 chip, which allowed for one-tap pairing with your iPhone. This has since been upgraded to the H1 chip, which allows for "Hey Siri" commands and more in the second-gen AirPods, with the AirPods Pro adding active noise-cancellation into the mix. In 2020, Apple unveiled its first premium over-ear AirPods in the AirPods Max.

AirPods Price Tracking

Here's a breakdown of current AirPods deals and prices.

Model Regular Price Best Price Current Price
AirPods w/ Charging Case $159 $99 $119 at Amazon
AirPods w/ Wireless Charging Case $199 $129.98 $159.98 at Amazon
AirPods Pro $249 $169 $179.99 at Amazon
AirPods Max $549 $449 $449 at Amazon

When it comes to AirPods pricing, we've seen discounts of varying amounts since the popular headphones were released. The lowest we've seen Apple's AirPods drop was $99 during Black Friday, though that deal didn't last very long. You can frequently find them priced at $110 to $150 from places like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and more.

As for the AirPods Pro, they have sold for as little as $169, which is $80 less than usual. That being said, they usually only drop to about $200 with any regularity. AirPods Max has seen even fewer deals, though more are cropping up now they have been out for a while.

AirPods vs. AirPods Pro vs. AirPods Max: Which should you buy?

When it comes to picking the right model of AirPods, no answer is correct for everyone. A lot of it will come down to personal preference, but some key differences may sway you one way or another in the hunt for a suitable model. Starting with the regular AirPods, these are the most compact and affordable option. The latest-generation model has the new H1 chip inside for Hey Siri support, the ability to have your SMS read aloud to you, and more. It also aims to keep a more reliable connection than the previous one.

As for the AirPods Pro, these headphones are more expensive but come with features that we had never seen in AirPods before. For example, with the Pro model, you get noise cancelation and a brand new Transparency mode. Noise cancelation is something that people have wanted in AirPods since they first came out, and the Transparency feature was well-liked after people started using it.

If you want to spend less and get most of the features, the regular AirPods are a solid purchase, but if you're going to go all-out on them now, the AirPods Pro won't let you down.

AirPods Max is an altogether different beast. These super-premium over-ear headphones combine high-fidelity audio with Active Noise Cancellation. Each part of their custom-built drivers works to produce sound with ultra-low distortion across the audible range. From deep, rich bass to accurate mids and crisp, clean highs, you'll hear every note with a new sense of clarity.

At $549, they are also over double the price of the previous most expensive set of AirPods, so you know these are aimed squarely at audiophiles and Apple's biggest fans.
